Hampstead Heath Extension
Hampstead Heath (locally known as "The Heath") is a park in the north of London , covering 791 acres (3.2 km It has 25 main ponds and areas of ancient woodland, bog, hedgerows and grassland. Parts of the park have been designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest by English Nature. The Hampstead Heath Extension is an area conjoining Hampstead Heath which lies to the south. Its farmland origins can still be seen - it preserves the old field boundaries, hedgerows and trees.
Hampstead Ponds
The ponds are situated slightly to the north of the Lido open air swimming pool at the southern tip of the park. Hampstead Ponds are three large freshwater swimming ponds - two designated single sex, and one for mixed bathing - fed by the River Fleet in Hampstead Heath .
In 2004, the Corporation of London, which operates the Heath, tried to close the ponds on the grounds that they were an unsustainable drain on their expenses and posed a health risk to swimmers. This failed, however. To defray costs, the Corporation introduced a charge for swimmers of per session, for concessions.
