History

To trace back a little history, as mentioned before, the Royal Parks of London are lands originally owned by the powerful people of the society. In particular, we are referring to the leaders of the monarchy of England or the United Kingdom , wherein the parks were created for the recreation of the royal family. Coupled with the increasing urbanization of London , some of these parks were preserved by the community as freely accessible open spaces. They became public parks that millions of Londoners and even tourists from all over the world came to visit. And so now, we have the eight Royal Parks for free, for everyone, all year round.

In terms of security, policing in the Royal Parks dates back to 1872 when the Parks Regulation Act created a force of Royal Park Keepers. However, the Park Keepers were given all the powers of police constables within the Parks at that time, which created a lot of negative uproar. In 1974 the Parks Regulation (Amendment) Act was passed and the Royal Parks Keepers became the Royal Parks Constabulary (RPC). Still on the process of improving security measures of the parks, the RPC, after a review by Mr. Anthony Speed, was replaced by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) for the responsibility of policing the Royal Parks on 1st April 2004. We shall discuss further on this at the management section.
