The London Contemporary Dance Theatre

The London Contemporary Dance Theatre, based at The Place, was founded by Robin Howard during the 1970s and based on the ideas of Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham.

For the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, it was founded by Merce Cunningham. Merce Cunningham is a choreographer who was a long-term collaborator with and romantic partner of John Cage. He was a soloist in Martha Graham's dance company, choreographing Paul Bowles' light opera The Wind Remains in 1943. He founded the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in the summer of 1953 with its first performances at Black Mountain College.

Meanwhile, the Siobhan Davies Dance Company is a contemporary dance company founded in 1988 by Siobhan Davies, previously with the London Contemporary Dance Theatre. The company is based in Battersea, London, only performing works by Siobhan Davies. It regularly takes part in the annual Dance Umbrella season.

Shen Wei Dance Arts was founded by Shen Wei, a founding member of China s first contemporary dance company, after being a painter, filmmaker and calligrapher. Shen Wei Dance Arts made its first visit to the UK as part of the Dance Umbrella season in 2004, which included the work Rite of Spring performed on an abstract water-color floor painting.

All these dance companies and world-renowned choreographers made Dance Umbrella a well-anticipated event every October.
