Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle is one of the main official residences of the British monarchs. The history and chronology of the castle can be traced through the reigns of the kings and queens who have occupied it, most of whom have had direct influence on the evolution of the castle itself. Windsor Castle was originally built by William the Conqueror , whose reign started in the year 1066. It was little more than a wooden fortress that formed part of a defensive ring of castles and forts surrounding London . Through the centuries, the castle had been built upon, improved, enlarged, converted to stone, and its area expanded - evolving from a mere fort to a palace.

Today, Windsor Castle is the preferred residence of the Royal Family, and visitors will find it easy to see why: the Royal Parks surrounding the castle is lush and lovely and teeming with deer. The castle itself is a beautiful solid stone structure that is both imposing and graceful at the same time. Among the attractions of the castle are the state apartments, Queen Mary's doll house collection, and St. George's chapel . The ramparts are a delight to walk upon, giving visitors a feel of a medieval atmosphere and a delightful view of the surrounding parks.
