The National Portrait Gallery was founded in 1856 by the historian Philip Stanhope. He wanted a gallery of original portraits that commemorate British history. Today, the main collection consists of over 10,000 portraits and over 250,000 archived images and photographs of everyone from politicians to movie stars to business tycoons. From the 14th century to the present day, famous names are sure to have a face put to them.
The Portrait Restaurant just outside the gallery offers a splendid view of London.
