National Gallery

The National Gallery is London 's most important art gallery. It was established in 1824 by Parliamentary decree, with the noble aim of allowing the public to enjoy and study the vast collection amassed by the Parliament. From its inception, the gallery has grown in size and now showcases some of the finest examples of Western European art from the 1200s to the 1900s. Today, there are over 2,000 paintings to be seen, spread out among the four wings of the gallery: the North wing, the West wing, the East wing, and the Sainsbury wing. All the galleries are organized in chronological order to give viewers an idea of how each artist progressed, from their earliest works to their last. Prestigious and priceless works on display include those by Botticelli, Monet, Constable, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Vermeer.

Visitors may avail of a free audio guide or may take a guided tour, which is also free. Admission to the gallery is free, but some special exhibitions may require admission. There is a souvenir shop and a quaint little restaurant called Crivelli's Garden.
