London Zoo


The London Zoo is the world's first scientific zoo. It was opened in 1828 as a menagerie for private scientific study. It as only in 1847 that the zoo was opened to the public. The zoo is managed by the Zoological Society of London , and currently houses more than 650 different species of animals, with over 12,000 species in its shelters. The London Zoo also opened the first reptile house in 1849, the first public aquarium in 1853, the first insect house in 1881, and the first children's zoo in 1938.

Today, the London Zoo is one of the world's oldest zoos. It has served as home to a few famous animals, probably the most famous being Winnie, an American black bear that became the inspiration for the children's series Winnie the Pooh. The zoo is currently being renovated to replace cages with enclosures that simulate the animals' native environments. A trip to the London Zoo is sure to delight children and adults alike. There are regular shows, such as Meet the Animals and exhibitions, such as the Web of Life exhibition.
