The British Museum is one of the oldest museums in the world, having been founded in 1753 by an Act of Parliament. It is based on the collections of Sir Hans Sloane. Contained in its 90-plus galleries are works from various periods of prehistory all the way to modern times, with items and artifacts collected from all over the world. A few of the most famous objects on display include the Rosetta Stone, Greek sculptures from the Parthenon, artifacts from the Sutton Hoo ship burial, and the famed Portland Vase.
