The (Camden Town) Jewish Museum

The Museum is occupied in two complementary sites, which represent an important cultural and educational resource for London . One part of the museum is housed in an elegant Victorian building in the cosmopolitan Camden Town .

This Museum has been awarded Designated Status by the Museums and Galleries Commission in recognition of its outstanding contribution through its priceless collections of Jewish ceremonial art. The Jewish Museum explores the history and religious life of the Jewish community in Britain and even beyond.

The collection in this museum plays an important part in recovering and preserving the diverse roots and heritage of Jewish people in Britain. It has a wide-ranging program of exhibitions, education and cultural events. Among its highlights are the History Gallery which includes a medieval wooden tax receipts, a Queen Anne silver tray and loving cups presented to the Lord Mayors of London , a ceramic jug showing champion boxer Daniel Mendoza. The History Gallery traces the story of the Jewish community in Britain from the Norman Conquest until recent times.

It also has its Ceremonial Art Gallery which portrays Jewish religious life, with objects of rarity and beauty. In here, there is a display of a sixteenth century Italian synagogue ark, cradle charms, Hanukah lamps, embroidered textiles and illuminated marriage contracts.
