London Trams is responsible for coordinating London 's tram network, by sub-contracting to private sector operators. At present the only tram system is Tramlink in south London , but others are along the way for the competition.
Furthermore, it is responsible for managing the way tram services are provided in Croydon through a 99-year Concession Agreement. It oversees tramway developments in London with involvement in the development of new national and international standards for tramways. TCL was awarded the 99-year Tramlink Concession Agreement in 1996 under the Government's Private Finance Initiative. It is up to TCL for the day-to-day running of London 's only tramway between Croydon, Wimbledon, New Addington and Beckenham . London Trams is responsible for ensuring TCL complies with statutory and TfL safety requirements. This includes reporting safety performance and ensuring TCL adopts continuous improvement in safety management. The department was formed in April 2001 and was rebranded as London Trams in 2003. It provides a single point of contact between Tramtrack Croydon Ltd, (TCL), the private company formed to run the Tramlink network and TfL.
