London officially contains two cities (the City of London, and the City of Westminster) but is not itself an official city. Today London comprises the conurbation known as Greater London, which is divided into thirty-two London Boroughs and the City of London and forms the London region of England. Historically, "London" referred to the square mile of the City of London at the conurbation's heart, from which the city grew. Between the years 1889 and 1965, it referred to the former County of London which covered the vicinity now known as Inner London. The urban area of the County of London was previously covered by the Metropolitan Board of Works.
The London Boroughs include Kensington and Chelsea, Hammersmith and Fulham, Wandsworth, Lambeth, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Islington, Camden, Brent, Ealing, Hounslow, Richmond, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Sutton, Croydon, Bromley, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley, Havering, Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge, Newham, Waltham Forest, Haringey, Enfield, Barnet, Harrow, and Hillingdo.
The administrative area of Greater London includes 32 London Boroughs, of which twelve (plus the City of London) comprise Inner London and 20 Outer London.
